Kevin M.
Mansoor
Kevin writes urban fantasy the way he lives — with humor woven into everything, a deep respect for the mess of being human, and a genuine belief that the best stories happen when the author is just as surprised as the reader.
He is not a people person. He is, however, an excellent story person. There’s a difference, and his close friends will confirm it.
No surprise for the author, no surprise for the reader.
The version his editor doesn’t see
At a party, Kevin is the one in the corner — not being antisocial, exactly, just quietly making up stories about everyone in the room. He considers this productive. The other guests have no idea.
His close friends once pointed out that every felony they committed in their youth was Kevin’s idea. He countered — correctly — that he also never let them get caught. This is, he argues, the mark of a good leader. His friends argue it’s the mark of something else entirely.
He is a sucker for any project that releases creativity — ridiculous birthday cakes for his granddaughters, furniture rescued from curbs and turned into something nobody expected. If there’s a blank canvas and a weird idea, Kevin is already three steps in.
About Duke
Duke is Kevin’s fantasy dog — the companion he’d have if his wife weren’t highly allergic. Everything Duke is in the books — loyal, fearless, a little unhinged about Hell Hounds, deeply convinced that demon thigh is a delicacy — that’s the dog Kevin would want at his side.
Readers consistently say Duke is their favorite character. Kevin is choosing to be fine with this.
“He didn’t plan for Duke to be the heart of the story. Then Duke was the heart of the story. That’s what pantsing gets you.”
